After all the sharp, piney, puckeringly bitter IPA's I've been having, I've opened this classic Belgian style Blonde Tripel from Boulevard Brewing out of Kansas City. (Synonymous with Belgium I know =P)
The Long Strange Tripel is a good example of this particular beer style. Very malty and somewhat yeasty with a touch of citrus/banana and distant fruit flavours. The heavy malt and lack of h0ps makes it come across particularly spicy/sweet. This beer pours with a crazy thick tan head which made it LOOK very appetizing. Also note the great lacing it left on my glass. (love that!) At 9%abv, the alcohol is mostly hidden, but after the first pint, I really started to taste it.
This time I really HAVE gone about as far from West Coast IPA as I could possibly get. And with that in mind.................. my new favourite "opposite end of the spectrum beer style" analogy:
Cascadian IPA is to Belgian Blonde Tripel as a monster truck is to a Lamborghini.
Both are essentially made with the same parts (or ingredients), but porportions are very different. They generally come from opposite sides of the world, but both will... on a very basic level do the same thing. ie: wet your whistle and transport you from A to B on four wheels.
It all comes down to taste and preference. My taste definitely leans towards pale ales. I can't help it. Partially it's because it's just one of my favourite styles... but also due to the fact of where I live. IPA's are what we do here!
So no matter of your preferred style or geography, be sure to branch out and enjoy the monster trucks and Lamborghini's of the beer world.
No one style is better than another..... simply more or less preferred by different folks.
